TEHRAN Iran welcomes two resolutions recently passed by the United Nations Security Council, which prohibits countries from supplying arms to the Taleban militia, said Iran's permanent representative to UN, Hadi Nejad Hosseinian on Monday, adding that Iran is ready to cooperate with the council in this regard.

Nejad Hosseinian said in an interview that the goal behind the resolution was to prevent the continuation of war as well as confusion in Afghanistan.

Iran's move in supporting UN sanctions is made with regards to the developing relations between the United States of America and the Taleban and Washington's continued support for the militia. He also said that prior to this the council had issued two resolutions, which put the Taleban, currently ruling Afghanistan, under an armaments sanction, IRNA reported.

Nejad Hosseinian added that under resolution 1333 the council was to propose ways of implementing the prohibition against the Taleban and, for this purpose, had mandated the formation of a delegation of experts.

Further in the interview, he said that the resolution provides that it is the duty of UN Secretary General Kofi Annan to lay the groundwork for implementing the sanctions thoroughly, monitor compliance of the resolution by neighboring countries of Afghanistan and collect and evaluate probable violations as well as recommend means of avoiding violations.

The Iranian official also said that one supervisory group made up of five experts will be created and positioned in New York along with a support group that will travel to Afghanistan's neighboring countries to make sure the sanctions are obeyed.

With regards to the resolution's financial support, Nejad Hosseinian said that the funds from the UN's general budget are to be used, adding that since the resolutions help Afghanistan's neighboring countries control their border regions with Afghanistan, they are of great significance.
